Technically, I’m Creative.
I have always been a storyteller and a bit of a ham. At nine, I conquered my fears and gave, upon reflection, what must have been a Tony-worthy performance of A Tooth for Paul Revere. In all seriousness, though storytelling is in my blood, it is my passion. I was in my first movie as an extra in the early ’80s. From then on, it was done. I was bitten by the bug and had to express these creative energies. I started my collegiate adventure with a full-ride theater arts scholarship. Never one to take the easy road, I decided to be someone, not pretend. Oh, the hubris of youth. So I packed my bags and left a cozy spot for many harder ones. At 20, I joined the U.S. Army on an airborne contract with a shot at Rangers school.
Unfortunately, I could not fulfill this dream due to a training accident, and I was ETS’ed three years later with an honorable medical discharge. However, as an 11B, I believe in “Follow Me,” and I became a leader in his respective fields over the next 20+ years of my career. In the ’90s, I created interactive adventures and new ones for clients big and small and many government entities. I also studied video production at the Art Institute of Seattle.
Working my way deep into the editorial and VFX realms. Working with new NLE workflows, I crafted many experimental and groundbreaking experiences that leveraged the latest digital production techniques. This foundational work allowed me to lead instead of following the new digital film revolution.
In 2003 I became a solutions architect and the Technology Evangelist for Digital Universe Foundation, working with NASA, Environmental Literacy Council, Earth911, Cosmos Studios, Jane Goodall Institute, M.I.T., Boston University, H.A.R.C.and a litany of other organizations and universities to create a 3D web browser and media portal.
My team developed a massive taxonomical dataset of information they could then overlay onto 3D models. For example, working with the blue marble from NASA to visualize 3D scientific data on the earth with ESRI tools. My team also built out a 3D experience of our solar system with data from NASA and other organizations. For example, working with James Lee Witt, former head of FEMA, to overlay the 3D data of the 2004 tsunami on the pacific rim onto a 3D map. We also built 3D climate change models with Dr. Robert Corell of the future projections of ice melt in the Arctic.
Unfortunately, these 3D worlds and interactive videos were a little too early. The bandwidth required was still a decade away, and their groundbreaking work could not be executed at the throttled speeds in the early aughts.
I was an adjunct professor at Portland State University. First, I started teaching New Media, Social and Advanced Social Media courses, and some Marketing classes. I then conducted a master’s study in Transmedia for the Publishing Group at Ooligan.
I ran my own media lab working with clients, including Intel, Xbox, Warner Bros., GNC, Dicks Sporting Goods, Subway, etc. His media projects have included an interactive virtual world tied to many real-world campaigns for both HP and Toyota. I also led a team of agencies building an 18-month transmedia project for Walmart.
I have worked with 3D and VR/XR production and workflows for over ten years. My team has developed 3D spaces, experiences, games, and GIS pre-visualization using off-the-shelf and custom-made technologies. We can scale to a hyper-reality story experience using motion controllers and other input devices. Integrating the API sensor data for haptic feedback and using magician troops can inspire the senses to make a story or create hyper-reality training.
These real-time techniques were applied directly in the integrated athletics and training space for his PRAXI endeavor and allowed me to use my years of entertainment experience to digitize the human avatar.
